The Modern Renaissance
Inspired by the Renaissance, my maternity portraits reflect the aesthetics of that time but aim to portray the modern expectant mother as strong and independent, in line with contemporary understandings of femininity. Renaissance artists usually depicted mothers with their children and rarely when pregnant, reflecting the period’s idea of pregnancy as a time of indecency. My project, The Modern Renaissance, draws on the elegance of Renaissance aesthetics but rejects the patriarchal dynamics of the age, instead celebrating the beauty and confidence of contemporary expectant mothers. My photographs are designed to empower the mother and embellish her natural beauty, while also embracing playful elements such as the objects of pregnancy cravings. It was important to me to photograph expectant mothers in a manner different from the typical Renaissance address, which was often subject to the male gaze.
